Line-by-line support

Liza left work thinking she would quickly cook a soup, but while passing the market near her home, she saw a stall with very fresh vegetables and decided to stop for a little while.

While she was looking at the prices, the vendor explained that the best tomatoes had been brought that morning from a small farm not far from the city.

She wanted to buy only two things, but in the end she filled the basket with tomatoes, herbs, dark bread, and soft cheese.

Since she already had pasta at home, she understood that she could change the plan and prepare a longer dinner, but much tastier than she had intended at first.

Before leaving, she also asked how best to keep the herbs, and the vendor advised her to put them in water instead of simply leaving them on the kitchen table.

When she returned home with full bags, she was already a little tired, but she felt that she had turned an ordinary shopping trip into a pleasant part of the evening.

Grammar in context

These are the two patterns doing the most work in this lesson. Learn them as reusable sentence frames, not as isolated rules.

пока + past / ongoing action

Пока is useful for describing one action happening while another detail enters the scene.

A background-action pattern.

а не + infinitive

Use а не to contrast one practical action with another possible one.

An alternative-action structure.
