On the night before her deadline, Chi-yin was still sitting at her desk revising the column she had written about the old pier.
Her first version had been written very directly, almost turning preservation and redevelopment into two entirely opposing positions.
But as she listened back through the interview recordings, she realized that many interviewees were not simply against change, but were afraid that certain kinds of change would make everyone forget too quickly how this place had once existed.
One older ferry worker spoke about waiting for boats at the pier when he was young, and his tone carried deep memory; on the other side, a younger shop owner nearby felt that if nothing changed for too long, the whole area would only become less and less able to attract new people.
Chi-yin slowly realized that if she only wanted to wrap the whole matter up in one loud sentence, what she wrote would not be true, but only something convenient for readers to immediately choose a side with.
Even though she knew that a text that was too complex might not be so easy to share, she still felt that she at least had to explain clearly why each person thought the way they did.
So later she changed the ending, no longer rushing to decide who was right, but instead writing that everyone was in fact trying to preserve what they themselves believed should not disappear.
When she finished the last sentence, dawn was almost breaking, and for the first time Chi-yin felt that this piece might not be the easiest to read, but it should be closer than the original version to the true voice of that place.
These are the two patterns doing the most work in this lesson. Learn them as reusable sentence frames, not as isolated rules.
而係 ... lets the writer reject a first interpretation and replace it with a more precise one.
A correction-and-reframing structure.
都 ... introduces a concession and then keeps the speaker's main point in place.
A concession-and-insistence pattern.
Story check: What is Chi-yin trying to do in this lesson, and what detail changes the situation?
Vocabulary check: Find the first key word, the second key word, the third key word, and one more key word in the story text again. Explain what each word is doing in its sentence.
Retell: Retell the scene in two or three sentences using the first key word and the second key word. Then add one sentence about why the ending matters for Chi-yin.
